Displayed at the Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum (Kitchener, Ontario, Canada), this 1820-era washtub and hand-cranked mangle illustrate the physical labour of early laundry. Before electric machines, women (and some men) scrubbed, boiled and wrung clothes by hand — a daily chore that consumed hours. The wooden wringer, with its metal rollers, squeezed water from linens, while the metal tub held soapy suds. See my little slideshow for a closer look. (https://youtu.be/7Rm9k98crt0)
