Caryatids of the Erechtheion
From atop the Acropolis, and across from the Parthenon, these maidens have been looking over the city of Athens for over two thousand years. One of the statues was removed by Lord Elgin and shipped to the UK. The Athenians were so mad that it is said elders "told their grandchildren that the Caryatids cried at night, mourning the loss of their sister" (ND Panaiotou, Guide with Reconstructions of Athens, 1990).

Note: The present caryatids are copies. The originals were moved to the Acropolis Museum and British Museum.
