Scientists believed the Pinta Giant #Tortoise had become extinct in the early 1960's - so when #LonesomeGeorge was discovered in 1972, he may have already spent 10 years in #isolation. Rewards were offered to Zoos and collections for a female Pinta Tortoise to provide a mate, but none were found, and George finally died of natural causes in 2012.
