As long as I can remember, the gas lamps in our historic city have been burning day and night. Many years ago the night watchman turned the lanterns on and off manually during his tour. This approach has become too expensive at some point. The city didn't have any money for the conversion to automatic mode either. So the lanterns were never switched off again.
The lanterns have been electrified piece by piece for some time. But some still burn the old way
