Near the town of Solnhofen in the Altmühltal / Bavaria there are large quarries in which slab limestone is extracted.
In the past, the best quality lithography stones were mined here. In this area the fossilization of the primeval bird "Archeopteryx lithographica" has been found between the layers of stone.
