The fifth season
Carnival or Fasching In Germany, is also called "the fifth season" It begins on 11 November, at 11 a.m., and ends with Ash Wednesday in February or March of the following year.
The origins of this tradition reach far back into the Middle Ages and are of historical significance. This "Alemannic Fastnacht" served to drive away winter. Colourfully dressed up and wearing devilish masks, the Germanic people paraded through the streets in spring, making a lot of noise with drums and rattles. The aim was to chase away the evil demons and spirits of winter.
The witches in my picture are typical of the parades. The scarier they are, the more beautiful they are.

The resemblance to Jacques Chirac, our former president, is truly striking. And I was scared by him too !
